Traditional Taps
For
those renovating a period property or just trying to recreate
a tranquil traditional setting, your choice of brassware can
be critical in creating the look.
What should you look for in terms of style?
Your first option is the traditional
cross head design with ceramic indices denoting ‘hot’
and ‘cold’. This design can be traced back to
the early 1900s and in fact Bristan even has a range which
is dubbed 1901 because it is based on an original design.
Your second option in the style
stakes is the lever style tap. Typified by Bristan’s
Renaissance range, this style features horizontal, ceramic
levers which move sideways to adjust the water flow. Although
this look chronologically is not much different in heritage
from the cross head style, in modern terms the style is much
‘older’. This is a period look with a capital
‘P’.
Your last option is difficult
to categorise as a traditional style, but it certainly has
its roots in the past. There has been a pendulum swing back
towards Art Deco styling in recent years throughout the home
and the bathroom is no different. Think angular, think chunky
and think chrome! If you opt for single bath and basin taps
in this style your are dabbling in the look, but to create
that opulent 1920’s gentleman’s washroom feel,
you really need to go for a mixer with an angular spout, or
better still a deck-mounted three hole mixer with the control
heads sunken into granite. Have a look at the Bristan Art
Deco range for inspiration.
